Want to join VGs?
We are always looking for talented and fun guys to join the ranks of the University of Virginia's first a cappella group! To audition, you need only be a student at the University (in any school, undergraduate or graduate). Our group has spanned all sorts of musical backgrounds — including VGs with no musical background at all! If you'd like to see us perform live before you audition, we perform every year at "Rotunda Sing," a UVA specific event that takes place on the lawn during the first week of classes.
When can I audition?
For the Fall of 2017, anyone intending to audition can sign up for a specific, 10 minute audition slot at Lawn Room 52. The days of auditions are August 24th and 25th from 12 to 5, and on those days check in will be at Lawn Room 52. Actual auditions will be held in Pavilion IV since Larry Sabato has graciously loaned us his Pavilion.
Why become a VG?
The Music. At UVA, the Virginia Gentlemen stand out for our diverse musical repertoire and our frequent professional performances. We perform everything from Frank Sinatra to Justin Timberlake to Pink Floyd, and regularly sing dozens of arrangements from our six-decade history.
The Travel. The Virginia Gentlemen are the only group at UVA that travels internationally every year. Over the course of our 63-year-old brotherhood, we have traveled to all seven continents, and recent destinations have included Antarctica, Southeast Asia, Peru, China, and Australia.
The Brotherhood. Once a VG, always a VG. Every one of us, from the Class of 1953 to the present day, remembers what it means to don the blue blazer and bow tie and step out onstage. Every five years, we invite hundreds of alumni back to Grounds to sing, spend time, and share stories. What will your story be?
If you have any other questions about our group, feel free to contact our President, Ethan Zell.
How Can I Become a VG?
Step One: Relax
First, take a breath and relax. Will you be a student at the University of Virginia this coming year? Are you male? Do you want to sing? If you answered yes to all three questions, you have everything you need to audition for the Virginia Gentlemen. We take guys of all levels of experience, and with all sorts of personalities.
Step Two: Get to Know Us
Before your audition even begins, you'll have a chance to see us perform at Rotunda Sing and chat with us at our Activities Fair table and even outside the audition room on the lawn. Read through our website and facebook page to get a sense of what it means to be a Virginia Gentlemen at UVA!
There's no secret right answer or particular characteristic we're looking for in a new Virginia Gentlemen - just some guys to hang out and sing with.
Step Three: Sing!
And finally, you'll start singing! We'll ask you to sing scales progressively higher and then progressively lower, and though it might sound boring, this is one of the most important parts of the process. In addition to being a great way to warm up for your solo, this is how we figure out where your voice fits with our group.
Your solo is your chance to show the group who you are as a singer and as a performer, so make sure it's something in which you can demonstrate your vocal strengths, something you feel comfortable with, and especially something you enjoy singing. While you can sing almost anything you like, we do ask that you refrain from singing Disney and that you sing primarily in English. If you can rap or beatbox, that's great, and we have a section for that on our audition sheet, so please stick to singing in your solo.
Some examples of solos current members auditioned with:
• Take Me to Church – Hozier
• Sunday Kind of Love – Frankie Valli
• Let's Stay Together – Al Greene
• Half the World Away – Oasis
• The Way You Make Me Feel – Michael Jackson
